1st and 2nd Grade
Curriculum & Areas of study
Students learn vowel sets, parts of speech, consonant blends, consonant digraphs, etc. to help them become fluent readers. During Reading, students use guided reading books to develop both fluency and reading comprehension. Students also learn how to write a paragraph and utilize adjectives and verbs in order to make their writing detailed.
Students learn about communities through reading and walks through the Alameda neighborhoods.
Students learn how to add, subtract, multiply and tell time through Direct Instruction, learning stations, worksheets and whiteboard use. First and Second grade follow the Saxon Math Curriculum.
Students learn about states of matter, solutions, parts of the body, and plants through both textbooks and hands on science experiments.
Students learn the Old Testament through stories, such as the life of Abraham, Moses, and Joseph. Students also learn about and discuss the life of Jesus through his testimony and miracles.
Background and teaching experience
Mr. Duaine Herd earned his Preliminary K-6 teaching credential from St. Mary's College in 2010 and Professional-Clear K-6 teaching credential for California in 2015. Herd previously taught Kindergarten, 3rd grade, and 5th grade in Concord and Antioch, in addition to serving as a long-term substitute for grades 2 and 3. This is his 3rd year teaching the 1st/2nd grade combination class at Alameda Christian School.
